Website Checklist

Creating a website can be compared to building a house. Do you want to host visitors? Then you need 4 things:

  • A piece of land on which you build your house;
  • a unique address so visitors know where to go;
  • a house, offering visitors a place to sit;
  • A fence, keeping unnecessary guests out.
What do you need for your website?
To create a website and thus receive visitors, you also need 4 components:
  • A piece of land: the hosting (server room);
  • An address: your domain name;
  • a house: the website tool;
  • a fence: website security and SSL.

Hosting

To create a website, you need hosting. This is a space on a server and can be thought of as a computer that houses websites, among other things. You rent such a (space on a) server from a provider. Of course we can also take care of this hosting, so that's one less thing to worry about!

Domain name

In order for people to visit your website, you need a domain name. A domain name is an easy-to-remember address of the server where your website resides. After all, otherwise you have to remember a number sequence to visit a website. This string of numbers is called an IP address (Internet Protocol address), for example, 91.184.8.50. So the domain name and the IP address associated with it, point to the same website.

Tips for a good domain name

Before registering a domain name, it is helpful to think about what name you will use. Because domain names have been in use for a while, it takes some creativity to find a suitable one that is still free.

Caution: Don't make your domain name too long. After all, it should be easy to remember. Do not use dashes in your domain name. Domain names with dashes are less findable in Google. Choose an extension that suits your business. Are you mainly active on the Belgian market? Then it's best to register a .be domain. Going international? Then choose a .com domain name.

Website tool

In addition to hosting and a domain name, you also need a tool. Of course, you don't want your visitors to come out on an empty page. You do this by using a tool to put a website on your hosting package. You can have a website developer do that, of course.

security & SSL

Obviously, you want to create a secure Web site. This way you can prevent malicious people from trying to invade your site. Therefore, make sure you secure your website connection with an SSL certificate. Most website packages include free Let's Encrypt SSL, which is automatically renewed.

In addition, it is important that you keep your website up-to-date. If you choose to enter into a maintenance contract, I will do it for you. In addition, don’t forget that your website must be GDPR compliant.
